Trading volume on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) set an all-time record in March with 22,248,581 futures and options contracts having an underlying market value of $17.8 trillion changing hands, according to exchange officials.

March 1995's volume surpasses last March, when a record volume at the CME is up 12 per cent year-over-year, officials add. Beginning in January, 1994 the CME revised its method of calculating volume by adding several transactions that serve to increase these totals, such as mutual offset systems transactions with the Singapore International Monetary Exchange (Simex).

The Bank of Japan reported that dollar/yen turnover in Tokyo for the week ended March 31 totalled $9.46 billion, up from $8.76 billion for the week ended March 24. Average daily dollar/mark turnover for the same period also rose, to $4.68 billion, from $4.56 billion, respectively.
