Hayami Rumours: No Smoke Without Fire, Say Observers

TOKYO -- FX analysts were speculating last week that Masaru Hayami, the governor of the Bank of Japan, may step down from the post he has occupied since March 1998. Press reports in Japan last week suggested he had already resigned.

However, a Bank of Japan spokesperson told reporters in Tokyo last week that new Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi had not received any formal resignation. Hayami himself, recently returned from the G7 meeting of finance ministers and central bankers, did not comment
