The SCB Risk Appetite Index (SCB RAI) uses the IMF's method for quantifying the appetite for risk. It does this using a risk appetite indicator rather than measuring actual level of risk. According to this methodology, a selection of exchange rates with varying characteristics is used. They have to include both higher and lower beta currencies, such as the South African rand and Swiss franc, for example.

These exchange rates are then ranked by the volatility of their excess returns and by excess
