One of the major conundrums pertains to rival Reuters, which alongside EBS has held a duopoly on the interbank market. The question gains significance when the implications of previous acquisitions by Icap are taken into account.

In May 2003, for example, the interdealer broker similarly acquired fixed- income e-broking platform, BrokerTec from a consortium of 14 banks. The acquisition resulted in an erosion of market share for Cantor Fitzgerald's electronic fixed-income broking platform, eSpeed
