The subject of the largest denomination of banknote is one that always attracts debate. Pre-euro, Italians could boast 10,000 lira notes, while in the US, there is a $500 note, although there are not many in circulation.

But there is only one winner: following the 1914--1918 World War, Germany was forced to pay huge reparations to the victorious allies. This triggered a period of economic carnage and crippling hyper-inflation in Germany in the 1920s which saw the mark, soar to 4,200,000,000,000
