Nordic Banks Show Mixed FX Revenues For Year- End 1996

Nordic banks are reporting mixed year-over-year foreign exchange-related income for 1996. The mixed results reflect volatile currency markets in the Swedish krona and Finnish markka, says Hanna Duer, senior economist at MMS International in London.

Duer says the markka was generally weaker during the earlier part of the year, but strengthened significantly from June onwards. The markka peaked in October on speculation related to pegging the markka to the Exchange Rate Mechanism, she says.
