Dealers React Against Malaysian PM's Call To Ban Foreign Exchange Trading

Market participants across Asia appear united in their opposition to recent comments by Malaysian prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, that indicate he wants to impose a ban on FX trading to ward off "Western currency speculators" from attacking the Malaysian ringgit. The comments, made at the World Bank/International Monetary Fund annual meeting in Hong Kong last week, have provoked a strong reaction from the forex community, which generally believes the ban will not be carried out.
