Sterling fails to drum up lasting support

Sterling traders had a busy time last week, but the currency was unable to find sustained support, says Jane Foley (right), currency strategist at Barclays Capital in London

The release of stronger than expected consumer price data, soft earnings numbers and the publication of the Bank of England's Quarterly Inflation Report created an eventful week for sterling last week.

Underlying inflation (RPIX), announced on Tuesday (February 12), rose to 2.6% year-on-year, well above the market median of 2
