NEWS

NEW YORK--Global mergers and acquisitions fuelled record flows of foreign direct investment last year, according to preliminary United Nations estimates.

And for the first time, the UK has overtaken the US as the world’s biggest overseas investor.

The figures, published by the UN Conference on Trade and Development last week, show worldwide cross border flows were $827 billion in 1999. Outward investment from UK companies was £132 billion ($214 billion) last year--78 per cent more than 1998
