Trichet trial fuels ECB job doubt

PARIS -- Speculation over who will take over from Wim Duisenberg as president of the European Central Bank (ECB) when he steps down next year mounted last week, following the news that prime candidate Jean-Claude Trichet must stand trial over the government bailout of Credit Lyonnais in 1992.

Judge Phillipe Courroye, who is investigating the case, rejected a call from the prosecutor’s office to drop the case, and last week ordered everyone under investigation to stand trial.
