Global Relief As Y2K Fears Dispelled

LONDON/NEW YORK--The clocks chimed midnight, the new century began and the world didn't end. Months--in some cases years--of preparation to avert a Y2K crisis appeared to have worked.

And in banking operations around the world almost a quarter of million people celebrated the new year at their desks.

One of the biggest operations came from Reuters which hosted a global rotating command centre which had 3,000 staff on duty at one time with a further 3000 potentially on call.
