The first financial bubble of the 21st century burst in 2001, when the dotcom industry finally took a nosedive. Although that industry was thoroughly modern, there was nothing new about the pattern of boom and bust in the high-tech sector, which mirrored the fates of countless financial bubbles since the dawn of commerce.

Comparisons are most often drawn with the famed tulip craze of the 1630s in Holland. That was fuelled by the Dutch people’s love affair with the newly-discovered Eastern flower
