Background

Each week the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) releases its commitment of traders (COT) report. The report provides a breakdown of each Tuesday's open interest for markets in which 20 or more traders hold positions equal to or above the reporting levels established by the CFTC. The open interest data is broken down into commercial or non-commercial positions, with non-commercial positions referred to as speculative positions. Speculative positions have many potential uses
