Speculation over US dollar as bearish sentiment gathers pace

NEW YORK – For the first time since 1995 the US dollar weakened significantly last week, sparking talk that the currency’s remarkable bull run may be coming to an end.

A combination of a downbeat assessment of the US economy from Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan, comments on the dollar from George W Bush, and a shift in Middle East fund portfolios from the US to Europe all contributed to the greenback’s hammering, analysts said.
