Today, the US dollar is the world’s reserve currency, but throughout its colourful history the greenback has had eight different incarnations.

The dollar first came into being in 1792 following the Mint Act, which established the dollar as the national currency of the US.

The Mint was devised by the then secretary of the treasury Alexander Hamilton, and the Mint building in Philadelphia was the first federal building erected under the Constitution.
