With earnings for the second quarter due in just a couple of weeks, few bank participants in the U.S. are expecting to log extraordinary gains in foreign exchange. The quiet conditions that prevailed during the quarter's first two months made it difficult to make money, market analysts say, but by June, activity recovered and provided a necessary dose of volatility.

Most banks probably will have little problem matching first-quarter gains, or even those in the second quarter of last year
