ITG analysis of intraday liquidity conditions during the World Cup

FIFA World Cup games attracted as much attention as policy-setting meetings at the European Central Bank, and researchers observed the price-formation process changed.

During the 2010 World Cup, to analyse market behaviour, bank researchers used data from 15 stock exchanges to examine the effects of individual games. They observed that market volumes declined by 55%, and the correlation between national and global stock market returns decreased by 20%.
