Japanese disaster causes yen uncertainty

The earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11 led to a week of widespread uncertainty over prospects for the yen, as the currency strengthened dramatically against the dollar and then weakened following the intervention by the finance ministers of the Group of 7 industrialised nations.

Having opened at 82.99 on the day of the earthquake, USD/JPY sank to a record low of 76.59 on March 17, before rebounding to 81.99 the following day once the G-7 agreed to co-ordinated currency
